Seasonal Marketing Is a Race — and the Finish Line Is Closer Than You Think

Ah, the memories…

Growing up, I cherished those early summer days at the pool or beach — a well-earned break after nine long months of school. The peace, the splash of water, the freedom. Then suddenly, like a record scratch on our transistor radios, the back-to-school ads would hit in July. Just like that, summer bliss came with a countdown clock.

Fast-forward to today, and it feels like everything’s on fast-forward. Halloween in July. Christmas in August. Pumpkin spice during heatwaves. Department stores reeking of cinnamon while it’s still 90 degrees outside.

So — why the rush?

Seasonal marketing starts early for two reasons

  1. Competitive Pressure: If Walmart launches a campaign in June, Target follows. No brand wants to be late to the party — or the sale.
  2. Consumer Demand: Many shoppers want the best deals early. They’re trying to stretch their budgets, beat inflation and avoid holiday chaos.

This means brands need to be first — but also different.

How to make your seasonal marketing stand out

Here are a few ways to rise above the noise:

  1. Make It an Experience Hosting a Christmas in July sale? Don’t stop at discounts. Turn it into an event: Outdoor movie night featuring Elf or Miracle on 34th Street - Holiday cookie bake-off in summer — Sponsor a Christmas “summer” fashion contest
  2. Involve Your Community Collaborate with local businesses, host contests, or donate part of proceeds to a holiday charity — even in July.
  3. Surprise and Delight Think beyond expected promos. Handwritten notes on online orders, personalized offers, quirky gift guides — the little things matter.
  4. Spread the Word

Promote the event through a fun and creative social media campaign. And don’t forget to alert the media, which loves quirky stories. Showing Elf in your parking lot in July? Your local media might just show up if asked. The result is positive PR for your business.

“You’re either first or you’re last”

This classic Ricky Bobby line from Talladega Nights may be tongue-in-cheek, but in retail, it hits home.

Being first means setting the pace. It forces your competitors to react — not lead. It also builds early loyalty and gets consumers planning their spend with you, not with someone else.

And let’s be honest: The kid in all of us still gets excited for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Seasonal marketing taps into nostalgia — and that’s powerful when done right.

Your seasonal marketing to-do list

  • DO be original. The best ideas haven’t all been taken — but yours should feel fresh. Showing Elf in your parking lot in July? Why not add an elf lookalike contest?
  • DO plan early and launch smart. Don’t just rush to be first — have something meaningful to say.
  • DO make it fun. Get your employees involved. When they enjoy it, your customers will, too.

Back to the beach (before the snow falls)

It’s 4:30 pm. I’ve got a few hours of sunshine left — and at least one pina colada calling my name. The mittens and hot toddies can wait.

But as marketers? We don’t get to hibernate. Seasonal strategy starts now.

What are you doing to stand out this season?
