Hey, welcome to our 25th podcast. It's hard to believe we've been doing this for so long at such a level of
0:10
excellence. Hey, we're going to have a great podcast today. It's about Thanksgiving. You know what we're what
0:16
we are thankful for in the area of communications and marketing and just
0:21
being able to do this twice a month and uh and to have all of you guys out there listening to us. Um, I'm Jeff Bomb. My
0:29
business partner, John Clendening, is right there. Hi, Jeff. And I will introduce this by saying John
0:34
has some entertain entertaining stuff, um, to share with us. So, uh, do you
0:39
want to lead it off? You're gonna be far more entertaining than me. Well, it's a bit of a buildup. I'm a
0:46
little nervous now. I don't know if I'm going to be able to fulfill. Well, you always do.
0:51
Let me Let me just say this. Hi, Jeff. Hi, John. Hi, Galman. Hi Gilman.
0:57
Hello. Wow.
1:02
We love a good Gilman greeting. So, so yeah. So, November is so happy November
1:08
everybody. And and when you live in a place like Dallas, Texas, which is located about four miles from the center
1:16
of the sun, you are always happy when I saw that Jeff. You are always happy when
1:23
November arrives because for the first time it actually starts you know wedding
1:28
cooling down. It's supposed to happen in October kind of does but November it
1:35
really starts to take hold. You can really feel the difference. Um and so yeah November's in full bloom which
1:41
means nothing less than Thanksgiving is in the air. And so, uh, Jeff and I and
1:48
Gellman, not unlike many others around this time of year, have been starting to think about what we are most thankful
1:55
for. Um, so the theme for this edition is, yes, to Jeff's point, what are we most thankful for in the area of
2:01
marketing and communications. Um, and we each have a list of things we're going
2:06
to go through. But first though, today is Veterans Day. We are recording this
2:12
on November 11th, Veterans Day. You will see this the week of the 17th or the week before Thanksgiving.
2:18
And I'm applauding for all the veterans. Wait, pardon me. I was applauding for all the veterans.
2:24
Oh, I didn't see you. Yeah, absolutely. We are thankful for three things on this day. And one, yes, is I mean this is a
2:32
serious comment. Yes, we are thankful for the service provided to our country
2:37
by our veterans. um both those living and those no longer
2:43
living. And people often and please tell I hope I have this right, but people
2:49
often confuse Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Memorial Day, my understanding is
2:56
to honor and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.
3:03
Veterans Day, which again is today, is to honor and remember all veterans, both
3:09
those living and those no longer living. Do I have that right, Jeff? I I I think that's right. Yeah.
3:15
Yeah. And that's that's a really important distinction distinction. So, thank you to our veterans. Um if any of
3:23
you are a veteran and you're listening or seeing this, thank you for your service. Um and uh for those of us who
3:30
have uh who have had family members um
3:35
uh served their country in the military and have lost their lives as a result of that honor and remember them as well. So
3:44
first and foremost that is what we are most thankful for on this day of all days. Right.
3:50
Absolutely. Is I would like to uphold my sister an
3:55
today is her birthday. Jeff, today's my sister's birthday. Happy birthday, Ann. Yes, she is a loyal listener and
4:02
follower of On the Offense. And so, happy birthday, sis. Um, and then the third thing,
4:11
the third thing we are thankful for, especially in Dallas, Texas, and you
4:16
know what I'm gonna say, Jeff, I know. Our dream came true.
4:23
This this dream has been one in our heads and our hearts for nine plus
4:29
months that a certain guy named Nico
4:36
got a spam call. Certain guy named Nico would be fired. Thus the chance of
4:42
firing Nico at the Mavs games for the last nine months. And today in Dallas,
4:48
Texas, located four miles from the center of the sun, the hot seat burned up and he was fired.
4:59
Yeah, Nico Harrison is out. You're out. You are out. Will we still
5:06
hear fired Nico Chance just for the hell of it? They were very Oh, for nostalgia, I guess, right?
5:12
Maybe for nostalgia. Finally, we can have a fresh start in
5:17
Mavs land. And for those of you who are loyal on the offense listeners, it was
5:22
just the last episode I right where we were talking about what can the Mavericks and the Cowboys do
5:28
and the Cowboys to um uh to bring some fans back and um
5:35
I don't think we mentioned this in that podcast firing Nico, but that
5:40
No, but I mean that's at the top of the list, John. At the very top of the list.
5:46
Yeah. That's like N one through n steps one through 99 were fire Nico step 100
5:53
right and so boy oh boy it seems like we're finally going to be able to have fresh start and yeah yeah I mean going
6:00
back to that last podcast which was all about being on brand
6:05
um imagine how much easier Jeff the job is going to be now for the marketing and
6:10
communications people right for sure for sure
6:16
cloud He was a cloud hanging over the building. So Nico is out. So we are having an
6:24
especially thankful on um on Veterans Day. So So yeah, what
6:31
we're going to talk about is what we're most thankful for uh in the world of in the in the crazy world of marketing and
6:38
communications. Um Jeff, why don't we start with you since I kind of took the
6:43
mic there and then we'll go from there. you can do. I think you I don't know how many things you have. I have three.
6:49
Yeah, I have like uh three or four. Okay, why don't you go test and let's
6:55
see what you got. Okay, so the first one should be pretty obvious to lots of folks and I'm going
7:00
to view this from the positive perspective. I think artificial intelligence, you know, that was nowhere to be seen a year ago and all of a
7:07
sudden it's changing the world and there are all kinds of doomsday predictions
7:12
regarding it taking over the world and destroying humanity. But but you know what? I use it all the time and it's
7:19
fantastic. Um, and if you learn how to get your arms around it and utilize it,
7:25
it's going to save so much time, produce so much more efficiency, productivity.
7:31
Um, I like it. I'm I'm a big chat GPT fan and um I'm always looking on new
7:38
ways to to utilize it. So, remember I'm a fan. Absolutely. Remember we had the podcast
7:44
with the Toms, the the two great Toms? The Toms. Yes. Um, and Thomas Tia said,
7:50
"I believe in that call." It's either you or the bot.
7:56
So, embrace it. I'm embracing it. Right. Absolutely.
8:01
Not going to run from it. It's going to be all around us. And it's spreading fast, but it's spreading fast because it
8:07
can do such incredible things. So, let's cure some diseases. Let's come up with
8:12
great answers to spread over to our clients. Um, you know, let's use it for all the good things, the unbelievable
8:19
things that can happen. Um, by the way, yeah, this not product placement, by the way,
8:26
Coca-Cola has not paid for product placement on on the offense. I'm just thirsty.
8:31
Okay. Well, that's good to know. Um, and as we talk about AI and all the things
8:38
that can it can do, you know, there there's this thing called deep fakes that are out there now. And it's
8:44
amazing. And I mean, there's the negative side of deep fakes, but there's the positive side of deep fakes, deep
8:50
fakes. You know, if you you saw the last Indiana Jones movie, they deaged Harrison Ford by like 30 years. Um, you
8:59
know, through using AI. And I think that's incredible. and think about all the things that could happen because of
9:05
that. Not all the negative, we know all the negative things and the fact that it's hard to decipher one from the
9:11
other, but at the same time, you know, heck, you can have musical acts that
9:17
have been deceased for years. I put out a new single today. Um, so I'm excited
9:23
about that. And then finally, it's just the spread of technology, the fact, and
9:28
they've been around for a long time. You and I both know this, John, but podcasts, the fact we can do this today
9:36
and we can go out to such a huge audience and you may not like what we
9:41
have to say, you may love what we have to say, you may not be entertained, you may be entertained,
9:46
who knows? But it just changes the the the whole cast of media and
9:53
communications and one-on-one. You know, the old world was passive. The new
9:59
world's interactive and I really am embracing that. A and finally, I'm
10:05
thankful for my family, my beautiful wife, my kids, our dog, John,
10:15
and the beautiful sunshine outside. But I think we always have to kind of look back and think about what's good in our
10:22
lives and then our professions come separately. Don,
10:28
I mean, I think maybe we should end the podcast right now. That's kind of tough to tough to uh follow that. I'm not sure
10:35
what to say. I just say God bless Jeff. God bless Jeff. God bless Jeff. Um
10:42
Okay. Well, I think that's a that's a great list. I would I would concur with all of that. Um so, what am I most
10:50
thankful for through the lens of marketing and communications? And I'm calling it the three G's.
10:56
Guidance, gadgets, and Gotham. Gotham.
11:02
Thankful. Gotham. So, let me start with guidance. Those who have placed their TR Well, okay, let
11:08
me back up. I mean, we're, you know, here we are. Our agency is,
11:14
call it 16 months old, right? And so those who have placed their trust in us
11:20
to provide guidance to them, we are thankful for them. I am talking
11:26
first and foremost of our clients. Um to all of our clients, uh we thank you for
11:35
entrusting us with the responsibility to provide you our best guidance based on
11:41
our experience. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. uh to those who have spent
11:47
time with us uh on calls on uh exploring potential business together. You know,
11:53
we learn things from every conversation and uh we thank you for investing your
12:00
time with us. Uh Jeff, our clients first network, I mean our partners, right? We
12:05
talk about our all. We've got some great folks out there. We we really do. And that is a huge
12:12
strength of clients first is the is the strength of our network. And um um we
12:20
are promoting our network as a strength of ours more and more overtly all the
12:26
time. And we're proud of each member of our network. We really really are. Um
12:32
and uh and then um and then of course last but perhaps first is Gellman Gman.
12:43
Oh my Gman. Yes. Yes. We are thankful Gellman for you for all
12:48
the guidance you provide us in the background. There would be no clients first and there would be no guidance
12:56
provided to our clients if it were not for Gellman. Gellman. Thank you so much
13:01
for everything. Um, a shucks.
13:07
Um, so that's guidance. Uh, gadgets and and you know it's
13:13
technology. I mean I concur with you Jeff. I mean technology technology enables us to get our jobs done more
13:20
efficiently which just provides us more time to think more strategically and
13:25
provide you know better guidance to our clients. Right? So technology we are all in on that 100%. Um technology enables
13:34
us to measure everything that we do. It used to now there are certain
13:42
pieces and parts of the tech of the marketing and communication spectrum that have always been inherently
13:50
measurable because they're more digital. There are other pieces and parts of it that were
13:56
not always as measurable, but honestly now they are. There is nothing that we
14:04
can't measure. There's nothing that we do that we can't measure in some quantitative way.
14:11
And that's all because of technology. um that makes us more accountable to our
14:16
clients, makes us more accountable to ourselves and it and and it just makes
14:22
us a better agency, right? Makes agencies better in general. There's no more getting there there's no
14:28
more, you know, there's no more uh hey, we're doing a good job and take our word
14:34
take our word for it BS, right? Because everything can be and should be
14:40
measured. Um, so we're thankful for that as well. It makes everyone better. Um,
14:46
and then speaking of AI earned media, you know, there's this whole thread out there which is just speaking of BS that
14:54
media is dead. Give me a break right now. Is is it a
15:01
tough time for mainstream media? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. But when I hear the term media
15:09
is dead, that implies to me at least that people are no longer consuming news
15:15
and information, it's just simply not true. The numbers don't back that up. Now, the channels
15:22
have changed. The ways in which people are finding information and thus consuming
15:29
it have changed 100%. And that is, you know, understanding all
15:36
of that and the results of that and the what has acred from that is part and
15:42
parcel of the guidance that Jeff and I bring to our clients, right? Um but uh
15:49
so we would never tell a client media is dead. We would say media has changed. Um
15:56
and the other thing you hear a lot is well since media is dead, PR must be dead. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
16:05
Um, you know who probably came up with that is Nico Harrison. Yes, it's good. He's fired.
16:12
He should be fired for he should be fired. Um, second time. Yeah. If if media is dead, PR is dead. Well,
16:20
neither are true. And and going back to AI, I mean, um, what's happening with
16:26
AI? More and more people are using AI instead of other ways to search for information. Jeff was just talking about
16:32
some of that. Well, guess what AI loves more than anything else when it searches
16:39
for information? It loves thirdparty endorsements, which is what ER generates
16:46
on behalf of organizations. Let me back that up with a factoid. Speaking of measurement, Jeff, I've got my trusty
16:53
notes right here. Oh my. Okay. Always got to have a prop, right? And you got some highlighting on there.
16:59
It always scares me. Got I got the highlighting the whole thing. So,
17:05
um All right. Recent a recent study published by Mukra
17:11
reports that a certain percentage of links cited by AI
17:18
came from journalists. A certain percentage. I'm going to quiz you in a minute. I'm here in my university
17:24
office. It's all I got. I got I I'm always thinking quizzes. Okay. A recent
17:31
study published by Mukra reports that X% of links cited by AI
17:36
are res are a are links that are stories created by journalists, which means it's
17:43
earned media, which means if you were the beneficiary of what we can assume is a positive story. Who knows? But uh that
17:51
was generated more often than not by a PR firm. What percentage do you think
17:57
that is, Jeff? Just there's no right or wrong. Whether that's not true. There is a right or wrong terms of what they
18:02
reported. Yeah. I have to I have to think about whether I want to be conservative or whether I want to go for it.
18:09
That's exactly I'm going to say 70%. Well, it's not that high. It's 27. It's
18:15
27. But but if but but in my mind I mean it should be
18:20
70% should be 100%. Well well I mean you know it's it's that
18:26
also it also an AI search also takes into account paid media owned media.
18:33
Absolutely. Yeah. Allformational sources. But but uh neither media nor PR are dead when more
18:41
than a quarter of what is generated through an AI search is is third party
18:48
endorsements. They're not and so that's because of technology. So I concur with Jeff.
18:54
Technology, we are thankful uh for technology. It makes everybody's job
18:59
better. But if you're in PR, we're here to tell you AI really likes you a lot.
19:05
Um, and that is nothing but good given that AI is controlling more and more of
19:10
our lives every day, right? Hey, hey, John, can I can I just give a quick gadget update here about how I
19:18
love certain gadgets, please? Okay. So, so if you see this is not an ad for Apple, but this is my iPhone.
19:26
Move the phone back. It's It's glare. It's all glare. Okay. Well, okay. It's a uh it's an
19:31
iPhone. I am very thankful for this iPhone
19:36
because through Apple and they're not a sponsor of ours, but I'm going to throw out some great things.
19:42
I know what you're going to say. I have the iCloud and I was able to back up everything from my computer to the
19:47
iCloud and I also bought the extended support. So, that came in very handy
19:53
yesterday when I spilled a large coffee on my computer and zapped it.
19:58
I wondered if you were going to be honest about what happened. I am honest. I am honest. I'm nothing but honest. Now, it got on my computer,
20:06
on my clothes, on our new white couch. Um, none of these were good things. And
20:12
the which your wife had asked you not to drink coffee on or eat
20:18
or eat and I was doing both. The food didn't drop.
20:24
Thank you, Apple. Thank you. You know what you since you did that, you know what you are? You're a husband.
20:31
Ah, most of us break that rule and most of us would live to regret having broken
20:37
that rule. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's that's my ad with regard to
20:43
gadgets. Back to you, John. I mean, you know, no, technology is is
20:48
nothing but good. Um, well, I wouldn't say that, but it's mostly good.
20:54
And then and and then Gothan. That's the third thing I'm thankful for. And and what I mean by that is, let me move my
21:01
phone a little bit. So, those of you out there and on the offense land, you can see three black and white
21:10
uh or what is essentially one black and white photo divided into three pictures.
21:17
That is a photo of Madison Avenue, the what used to be the real physical
21:24
home of the advertising industry, now really just the symbolic home of at
21:29
least the US advertising industry. Where is Madison?
21:34
New York. New York, baby. New York City. The capital of the world. And that is
21:40
where I am heading tomorrow. I am wheels up to Gotham. Uh, Gotham is what Batman,
21:47
right? Everybody knows it, right? New York. Um, sometimes I call New York Gotham, but I am wheels up to Gotham
21:54
tomorrow. Uh, and I am going I am chaperon. This will be the first time in my life,
22:01
I think, that I've chaperoned others on a plane trip other than my kids. So, we
22:10
have some student advertising leaders here at the University of North Texas who are going to New York to do two
22:18
things. One is participate in the American Advertising Federation Student
22:23
Advertising Career Conference. Uh, and we're also going to be doing
22:28
some agency meetings. And, you know, I mean, there's lots of agencies in
22:34
Dallas. In fact, more than ever, uh, these days, you got some
22:40
most large agencies, whether it's advertising or PR, have offices in
22:47
Dallas. And I I've actually, Jeff, only come to really fully appreciate this
22:54
somewhat recently, how many great homegrown ad agencies there are in Dallas. It's it's really it's an
23:02
and why is that by the way? Why is everything I this is an aside but
23:08
why is the advertising industry in Dallas exploding? Because Dallas is
23:13
exploding. Exploding because Texas is exploding. By far the
23:19
best place to live for business in the United States. Hands down. We've talked
23:24
about this on prior podcasts, right? Well, no surprise. The agency culture in
23:32
Dallas is exploding. And so, I don't mean to say that. Well, you know,
23:39
it we can meet, these students can meet with great agencies in Dallas all day long. There's just nothing quite like
23:45
being at a New York City ad agency, right? Especially there really isn't anything like it.
23:51
It's just the sounds of the streets, smells, and then just those banners in front of
23:56
those buildings. Just totally iconic. Iconic. The rudeness, the honking, the noise,
24:02
the stress. Nothing like it, right? Nothing like it. Um, no, I I uh I love New York. Uh, and
24:10
I'm excited to chaperon the kids to these events. Um, I met them right
24:15
before this podcast, actually, to go through the logistics of the trip. And at one point I was giving them like dad
24:22
advice. I mean I went into full debt. The cars will not stop for you. The cabs will not stop. I mean stuff like that
24:30
because two of these three students have never been to New York before. Oh and and right and stuff like that. But
24:37
um we're going to have a full agenda. We're going to be really kind of just just raking it all in. all things New
24:44
York, all things ad agency and and um
24:50
uh so I'm looking forward to being there. Always thankful for New York City, thankful for advertising, thankful
24:57
for having the chance to spend time with these really, really bright students and
25:02
um thankful to have the opportunity to meet some new agency people uh and you
25:08
know maybe learn a thing or two, Jeff, about some new trends in advertising, right? Yeah. really
25:13
very important really looking forward to that. So those are the three things that were on my list. I have a fourth G, but I'm going
25:20
to hold that back for our conclusion. Anything else we want to talk about that
25:25
we're thankful for in the world of marketing and communications?
25:32
You know, I look back and I should stop looking back, but when we were young pups, I've said this before, there were
25:40
three TV stations and then after midnight, you had a test pattern as one. Um, you had two newspapers maybe. Um,
25:48
you had deadlines, you didn't have an internet out there. So, that media environment was very easy, not easy, but
25:56
a lot more manageable. We've had to totally adjust to all these new
26:01
technologies, all these new channels out there. Totally changes the way we look at the world totally changes the way we
26:08
interact with media makes small places have a lot more gravity, a lot more
26:14
power. Um because something that goes live in Alaska or goes live in the
26:19
Philippines or whatever is immediately live here. So it's just incredible. So
26:25
that power of citizen journalists or whatever you want to call them and then you've got those influencers out there.
26:31
The power dynamics have changed so much. So to understand how to influence people, you have to understand who these
26:38
people are. And that's something I'm thankful we have the opportunity to
26:43
broaden our horizons. Um and it's sometimes a little intimidating honestly. But uh hey, anything you need
26:51
to do and you have to do you you can do. And that's what I I'm kind of thankful for.
26:57
I like that comment a lot. Um I agree with you. It the the the marketing
27:03
communications landscape has wildly changed and evolved and expanded and all
27:11
that kind of stuff. And it's all fascinating to me. Like that's one of
27:16
the reasons I love teaching because in order to just,
27:22
you know, for those of you out there, you go to college, right? You go to class, you may or may not be awake. What
27:28
you're not thinking about is all that went into preparing that lecture, right?
27:34
And there's a lot of stuff that goes into it. And you walk into a classroom, it's no different than you walking in
27:40
front of a client. You got to know what's going on out there. you know what the new trends are, what the challenges
27:47
are, what the pro of this is and the con of that is and um all of that stuff,
27:57
right? And it is a fascinating exercise that Jeff, you and I get to to go
28:04
through on a literally on a daily basis because that's our job is to know that
28:09
stuff better than the client does so we can
28:14
provide going back to one of the G-words, the best guidance to a client, right? We need to
28:20
absolutely we need to be their teacher. I I I'd like to think we do a pretty good job
28:25
with that. We can always get better and we will continue to get better because we both freaking love this stuff. I I
28:36
could talk about this stuff all day. I really could. And so, um, yeah, having
28:42
the chance to have our finger on the pulse of what's going on and share that with students and clients and,
28:50
etc., etc., is just it's just thrilling. It really is. Um,
28:56
do you mind if I start with the conclusion? No, no, I would love you to.
29:02
Okay. Um, I am thankful for one more. So, I did I did guidance, gadgets,
29:08
Gotham. I am especially thankful for one more twocllable G word and that is
29:16
gravy. Gravy. Jeff. I'm thank for gravy. The kids are coming home, including
29:23
Gellman. And I'm gonna I'm gonna try and do this without tearing up. Okay. All of the kids are coming home for
29:29
Thanksgiving. I should say when I say all the kids, I means the one I mean the ones that aren't living in Dallas. So,
29:34
two are here, three are elsewhere. The three are who are elsewhere are all coming home. All seven of us humans and
29:42
our three canines. So, the family of 10 are all going to be together for most of
29:49
Thanksgiving week. I mean, for the lion's share of it. And boy oh boy, that
29:54
um that is something to be thankful for, right? Uh no school that week. Thanksgiving break for up here in
30:02
Denton, Texas. Uh we may or may not have some client work to do that week. We'll see. If we do, that's fine. But I'll be
30:08
doing it from home uh with the family in tow. And um you know when your kids live
30:15
elsewhere, boy oh boy, when everybody comes home to be together at one time, that is definitely something to be
30:22
thankful for. So the gravy piece of it is uh I mean I'm looking forward to the
30:28
simple times when we're sitting on the couch just hanging out. I'm looking forward to watching some
30:34
really good football. And yes, I am looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner. And and I'm looking
30:41
forward to that moment where I've got everything piled on there and then I'm going to go to the gravy
30:49
ladle. Is that the word? Ladle. Yeah, it's a ladle. Yeah. Yeah. And I am going to over gravy my meal.
30:57
I'm going to go for extra gravy. I'm I'm not going to take all the gravy because
31:03
that's kind of a buzzkill for everybody else. Yeah. Yeah, you're a ruin. I'm going in full gravy. I am
31:11
in advance this Thanksgiving for gravy.
31:17
Can't blame you. Yep. All good. All good. Over to you to
31:23
close us out. Yeah. And and like John, the gravy is very important to me. And having family
31:30
here over the holidays, that's fantastic. You know, you aren't together with everyone except for holidays. You
31:37
know, some people are lucky enough to see them more than that, but you know, for me, that's fantastic. And you cook
31:43
that nice meal and you have all the aromomas through the air of the turkey and the stuffing and the what have you,
31:50
the pumpkin pie. It's it's just a wonderful day. with regards to food um
31:55
and football and family. And uh there's no better feeling than wrapping up that
32:02
very early afternoon meal, retiring into the family room, sitting
32:07
in my favorite chair, watching football, and dozing off. You just can't beat
32:12
that. That is the ultimate combination. You you you can't beat it. You can't beat it. The the only problem
32:20
is that again going back to the whole fire Nico thing and 3:15 on th on Thanksgiving afternoon
32:29
is when the Cowboys kick off. Yes. Yes. They have a bad habit of giving us
32:36
indigestion after Thanksgiving dinner. That needs to
32:42
stop. Yeah. Yeah. I I need to get some privacy. And you know who they house.
32:48
You know who they play on Thanksgiving this year? Who? The Chiefs.
32:54
Oh god. So, this could be a problem. This could could be a problem.
33:00
Could be a problem. But, uh, but no, even with the Chiefs, I'm looking forward to it. And uh here,
33:06
